GWO BTT: The big industry problem that nobody's talking about

In 2022, WTS was one of 16 SMEs supported by RTC North’s Supply Chain North East programme to exhibit at OWNE. 3 years on and we’re back - still connected, still learning, and proud to be part of the North East’s growing renewables community.
OWNE 2022 was our first time exhibiting - it was a big step for WTS and a chance to plant our flag in the region’s thriving offshore wind sector. And that experience gave us not only a lot more visibility, but also relationships, insight, and a deeper understanding of how fast the North East was growing into the UK’s renewables hub.
This week, standing in the same space at the Beacon of Light for OWNE 2025, that sense of momentum feels even stronger.
The room is buzzing with the same energy, but the conversations have matured. Investment is accelerating, projects like Dogger Bank and ORE Catapult’s brand-new Technology Development Centre in Blyth are setting new benchmarks on a national and global scale, and the focus on skills has become louder and more urgent.

For us, that’s the thread that links every OWNE event: connection and relevance.
We can’t deliver real-world training in isolation, because to teach what truly matters, we have to stay close to the people, companies, and challenges shaping the sector day by day.
That’s why we show up to these events, and this one in particular. It’s not to tick a networking box, but to listen, to share, and to stay aligned with the realities offshore and on site.
Training that works starts with conversations to hear what’s changing, where the pressure points are, and how we can help close the skills gap through honest, grounded learning.
The North East remains the beating heart of this industry. It’s where ideas turn into infrastructure, and where businesses like ours can make a real contribution.
Being here reminds us that connection isn’t an extra, it’s part of the job. It’s how we keep our training real, relevant, and rooted in the world our learners work in.
OWNE always leaves us thinking about what’s next: for the region, the industry, and for how we train.
If something from this year’s event resonated with you, let’s keep the conversation going. We’re always interested in how others are approaching the skills challenge in renewables - email hello@windtrainingsolutions.com or find us on LinkedIn.
